Essay #4

I just finished my annotated bibliography.  It gave me a lot of different ideas for my paper that I wasn't even thinking about before.  I now have a couple different routes that I could go with my paper.  I think it will be easy to put this paper together, seeing as how I have so many sources of information.  They are all good sources too.  I'm glad that we had to do the annotated bibliography, because if not I would have been struggling to get a couple different ideas to talk about.

This is How we Live

I liked this article in the book because it was all real life situations.  Things that actually happen to us, and things that are so true.  I agree and disagree that we do not need some of these new technologies, but some new things that they are coming up with are very convenient.  In different ways we can use these new technologies maybe for health reasons or mobility issues.  Like the moving sidewalk is good for people that have a hard time walking, or the sensor soap dispensers, dryers, and toilets because who wants to touch a public toilet flusher.  It's just gross.  These technologies do come in handy whether we believe so or not.

Pearls Before Breakfast

In this article of reading, "Pearls Before Breakfast," you get to see the different aspects of music and what are some of the factors that effect it.  While Joshua Bell is playing at the Metro, he does not get the attention that is wanted for this experiment.  While he is playing, he does not get much of any donations, does not get many listeners, or even any looks from any of the people passing by.  Even though Bell is playing some of the best music ever made on his violin, no one seems to really care because they have places to be or don't want to stop and have to give a donation.  I think that if the people passing by were really dedicated to the music that Bell was playing, then those types of people would have stopped and listened for a little bit and maybe even given a donation.  But most people are not interested in people playing an instrument in a random place because they don't know them, usually do not know the material, and also do not want to take money out of their own wallet for something they could careless about.  This was the main problem for Joshua Bell at the Metro.

Starbucks

I am doing my community project on a local Starbucks.  In this Starbucks, all of the workers are very uniform in what they wear.  There is a manager working at all times and helping out the other workers.  The technology is very important to this community because without it they would not be able to make the coffee, food, and other products.  The workers communicate with each other clearly and fast to make for quick service to their customers.  The customers order coffee or food and sit down with their computers or work.  Many people come and go through this Starbucks.  The workers work efficiently, and when one is switching a shift the manager takes over and completes their work.  I interviewed one of the workers briefly seeing as they didn't have much time to talk.  They talked about how they like working here and that it can get very hectic at times but it makes the time go by a lot faster.

Community Project

My community project is coming along very well.  I have done one observation so far and one interview, but got a lot of information just from those two sittings.

Online vs. Real World

The article, "Someone to Watch over Me," is mostly about online databases and how you meet people.  I think that this gives us a perspective on how much we depend on online resources to meet people these days.  Also in the article, she explains how it's sometimes awkward to meet people in person.  I think that sometimes its awkward to meet people in person because we depend so much on the internet, email, and text messages.  Face to face conversation is very different then talking to someone on the internet or through a chat.  Online you have time to think about what you want to say.  In person, you are put on the spot so you don't have that hidden factor put into it.

Community

In the Community excerpt that we had to read, I feel like I could really relate to it.  The Nike billboard is a good way of advertising what a community should look and feel like.  I agree that wherever you go, there are communities that have different challenges and "assumptions" of what is right and wrong.  In a community, there should definitely be a sense of support for everyone in it.  No matter what, a community should accept us for who we are, but we know that is not always the case.  I can relate to this reading because in my hometown, our community is very tightly knit.  There is a sense of stability, support, and acceptance.
